Filming

Few locations can match the romance, drama and history of Edinburgh Castle. Just the sight of this mighty fortress known as the ‘defender of the nation’ is enough to stir the soul.

The Defender of the Nation has inspired writers and filmmakers from around the world, appearing as a majestic backdrop to many film and TV productions. Welcoming almost 2 million people a year, the castle also welcomed Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan, and crew for 2022’s The Lost King – a film which follows the real-life story of Philippa Langley’s (Sally Hawkins) quest to find the remains of Richard III. Edinburgh Castle can also be spotted in scenes of Burke and Hare (2010) and James McAvoy’s Filth (2013).
